There are so many misconceptions, myths and expectations about meditation. Here are just a few:
- Meditation means you have to stop thinking
- Meditation means you have to sit for long periods of time
- If I don’t see, hear or experience something magical I did it wrong
- Meditation is part of religious or spiritual practice
- Meditation only benefits those that are stressed or depressed
- Meditation takes years of discipline
- Meditation is for people who practice yoga
- I need to create a special place to practice
Trying to “calm the mind” is not effective; rather, it often generates frustration and stress. Meditation is about learning to be present with yourself.
